Are You Truly Spiritual?

Are You Truly Spiritual?

The best meaning of the word talks about relationships—not just with other people, friends and family; but also with everything around us.

Are you spiritual? If you are, why? They may seem like simple questions, but it is much more difficult than you might think. Whenever I ask those questions, I seem to get different reactions every time.

So, for answers I went out to find the real definition of spirituality. A meaning that would be easy for everyone to comprehend, and to embrace as the truth. Something we could all agree on. I have traveled far for the answer, spending many years studying the subject in depth. I devoted my life trying to understand.

This is what I have found, and I will give it to you now.

The root word for spirituality is “spirit.” Even though that is obvious, it causes confusion for many people. To start, there is a difference between “spirit” and “spirits.” Spirits refer to individual entities, like ghosts. Thinking of otherworldly spirits in understanding spirituality sends us in the wrong direction. The singular “spirit,” on the other hand, talks about the universal energy that binds us all. This is closer to what I believe is the true meaning of spirituality.

What does the word “spirit” actually mean? This is the important part, if we really want to understand spirituality. I see the best meaning of the word talks about relationships—not just with other people, friends and family, but also with everything around us. Every interaction we have with the outside world—everything we see, hear, touch, taste and smell—in one form or another is a relationship. Not only at the conscious level of existence but in all planes of understanding... far beyond the material world.

To bring spirituality down to a personal level, you must ask yourself a few questions. How are your relationships with the conscious world? Do you appreciate every single interaction, or do you let them pass by without any notice? Your answers may surprise you!

To feel the true meaning of spirituality, here are some things you can do—right now—to see just how spiritual you are.

Start by making a list of all the interactions you have as you go about your daily life. Start with the most noticeable ones—like friends, family and lovers—and move down to the less obvious—the deeper levels like animals, plants, rocks and crystals. Think of it as the first exercise in developing your spirituality.

How does it feel? Better, right? I can imagine you are feeling a little closer to true spirituality.

Here is another exercise: imagine inside you is a magnet, moving through your everyday life. Now imagine everything else in existence is also magnetized. Have you ever noticed how two magnets are either attracted or repel each other? Think about this same principle working on our spirits. It is the relationship between you and your conscious—and unconscious—existence. That is spirituality. Ponder it deeply, and feel how it works for you!

Once you make an effort to be mindful of your spirituality, you will find yourself looking at life in a whole new light. By understanding your relationship with everything around you, you can then truthfully answer the question—are you spiritual?
